At the Britannia Community Services Centre in Vancouver, making music helps make a difference in kid’s lives. Learning percussion techniques from other cultures is important to help the students learn and share the important language of music from all over the world. The program is taught through an oral tradition where kids learn the music in a way that is both accessible and engaging.  Students love the chance to express themselves through all the new kinds of music they are learning.

The Britannia Community Services Centre is just one part of a larger neighborhood complex which meets the needs of its community.  The complex includes two schools, a daycare, a library, a recreation area with swimming pool and skating rink, and several adult learning centres. One of its most popular programs is the World Music Program. This program teaches kids ages 6 and up all sorts of musical and percussion traditions and techniques from all around the world.  Teachers include both professional musicians as well as pre-professional youth instructors.

Now, Britannia Centre is sponsoring a new program – “Youth to Youth – Teaching World Music Through the Oral Tradition”. Six advanced youth instructors will teach Zimbabwean Marimba and Afro Cuban Percussion Classes in schools and community centres all over Vancouver. Over 150 students are expected to take part in the classes, and the Britannia Centre hopes that follow up programs will soon develop in schools, the community, or at Britannia itself!
