In Zambia, outdoor adventures make school more exciting for the children at Chengelo Secondary School. This program encourages kids to venture out into the wilderness to discover more about themselves, build up on their confidence, and become physically active.

Children at Chengelo are encouraged to take part in physical education outdoor activities such as, camping, hiking, orienteering, rock climbing, mountain climbing, abseiling and canoeing. Many of these activities are based at an outdoor centre called Ndubaluba, which is approximately 15 km away from the school, while longer expeditions are organized during school breaks.

Through the “International Youth Award scheme” (IYA) children are encouraged to record their progress in these extra curricular activities in to achieve awards. Apart from the expeditions, there are three other component parts to the Award – Service, Skills and Physical Recreation.

On average most students graduate from the school having completed the scheme at bronze level, but those who proceed to the sixth form to take Advanced Levels can also take the IYA at Gold level. In 2006 Zambia’s President Levy Mwanawasa made a visit to the school, and during that time gave the awards to the students.

Chengelo has a history of a strong tradition in outdoor activities, and it’s by the participation of children in these activities that carry on this tradition.
