Students, staff and parents in Joamie, Iquauit use their website to tell the story of their exceptional school. With over 1000 environmental projects to their credit, Joamie has received many awards and honours for their integrated approach to learning. The Joamie School building is LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified. It was rebuilt in 2005 after the school was devastated by fire. The new school uses 45 % less energy and 50% less water than the old school. Students also communicate about sustainability in a broader context. Stories of culture, community and the environment are linked on their student-teacher-parent collaborative website. Joamie students and teachers remind us that projects big and small create the fabric of our school community. The kindergarten mascot project is a great example. Students from schools across Canada sent their mascots on journeys across the country. Qimmiq (a stuffed sled dog), went to Edmonton. Chomper and Digger came to Joamie. Teachers assist kindergarten students to write about the visiting mascot adventures on a web page. This project helps kids from across Canada understand regional issues at their own learning level and communicate with other kids in their own words across Canada. Students have received international recognition for their drum dancing and throat singing. Inuktittut, English and French are the three language options for students. The Joamie web-tool reminds us that communities are unique and special because of their stories. |
